FDA Regulations - What Colors Are Allowed In Bath Bombs May 12 2017

There has been a lot of conflicting information regarding what colors are legal to use in the making of Bath Bombs. I have been directly in touch with one of the Directors at the FDA who cleared up some grey areas around this topic. There is a lot of confusion whether the use of neons in bath bombs is within the FDA regulations, or if using micas in bath bombs are regulated.  The following is what information I have collected directly from the FDA.

According the the FDA, bath bombs, bath truffles, bubble bars, bath salts and nail polish are regulated as cosmetics.  They should, according to the FDA, only contain FDA approved color additives.  Bath bombs and nail polish are FDA regulated products.

If the color additive is not on this list it is not permitted in the U.S.

(List of ingredients, uses and restrictions for each approved color additive which are listed on the FDA site:

If the color additive is only allowed for external use (general use), then it is not allowed in lip products or bath salts/bombs.  Please see the definition of external use in the Code of Federal Regulations Title 21 Part 70.3(v):

  • 70.3   Definitions.……(v) The terms externally applied drugs and externally applied cosmetics mean drugs or cosmetics applied only to external parts of the body and not to the lips or any body surface covered by mucous membrane.

Regulations around neon pigments or other pigment blends:

If the dye or lake, such as Yellow 5, Red 28, Red 40, etc. is not from a certified lot, then the pigment blend is not permitted in FDA regulated products.  It may be okay in countries other than the United States, but in the USA they are not allowed.

If you use an approved color additive in your bath bomb, it must be batch certified by the supplier you purchased it from.   Neons are not permitted at all unless the Pigment Mixture contains Batch Certified dyes or Batch Certified lakes by the FDA.  If you use a supplier that sells a neon color and they claim it is safe for nail polish, lips or bath bombs, than demand lot numbers for those D&C or FD&C dyes or lakes within the Pigment Mixture.

Micas, on the other hand, are not regulated by the FDA even if they are cosmetic grade and can be used in bath products.  Micas can be used in cosmetics depending on their ingredients.  Buy only from reputable companies that can provide documentation regarding whether or not they are lip safe, eye safe, or safe for general use.

Again, if you are making bath bombs or nail polish and selling them to the public, make sure you are not breaching the regulations set forth by the FDA.

 In short:

  • Micas are allowed since they are not regulated by the FDA
  • Neon pigments are not allowed unless they are a mixture which contain FD&C or D&C batch certified dyes (these mixtures are then exempt from certification).
  • A straight color additive, such as a dye or Aluminum Lake must be Batch Certified

I hope some of the misinformation that is out there has been made more clear.  We do sell Batch Certified Aluminum Lakes and micas.

Feel free to contact us if you have any questions:

Signature Confirmations On Orders April 24 2017

Our shipping rates are pulled directly from USPS and FedEx.

We just made a Signature Required fee mandatory and is included in the shipping costs within the U.S. ($5.00 for FedEx and only $2.45 for USPS packages).  Please understand that we are trying to eliminate the need to raise prices.  We have replaced multiple packages due to theft or mistaken address delivery over the years and dozens of orders just this month.  We just can not continue to replace these "missing" packages or we will be forced to raise our prices.  We don't want to do that.  This is why we chose to add it to all packages across the board, no matter how you have your order shipped.

The Signature Required fee will ensure that your package will be delivered to YOU, and not stolen or left at a wrong address at someone's front door. Packages being left on doorsteps, porches or in front of apartment dwellings will be a thing of the past and thieves will have to find other packages to steal.  Please remember that we include this fee now in our shipping prices to protect you so our prices remain what they are.

We understand sometimes changes are inconvenient to some of you.  Perhaps if you work outside of the home and will be at work, please have it sent to your place of business.  If you know you are going away, make sure the post office knows to hold your mail.  If you can't receive your package at work, ask your neighbor if you can ship it to them.  There are choices and we hope you know our concerns are real and we don't want to inconvenience you.

Thank you for understanding.

Our New Fragrance Distributor March 15 2017

We heard your cries of outrage about losing the ability to purchase your favorite ORIGINAL Mad Oils Fragrance Oils (MOFOs) 365 days a year and we have come up with the perfect solution!

Beginning in early April, instead of running another MOFO Event, ALL Mad Oils Fragrance Oils can be purchased from Arizona Soap Supply in 2 oz., 4 oz., 8 oz. and 16 oz. sizes! This means you will have access to all the ORIGINAL Mad Oils Fragrance Oils, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

We are so excited about working with Norm at Arizona Soap Supply and we know you will too! The soap supply company is located in Chandler, Arizona (near Phoenix). They carry a variety of wonderful things, such as shea and cocoa butters, carrier oils, melt and pour bases, clays, muds and salts, soapmaking kits, essential oils and more. And if you are in the area, they offer soapmaking classes, Meet & Greets and you can arrange to pick up your order.

Original MOFOs available in April:

Mad Oils Fragrance Oil (MOFO) Event - Schedule & Rules, Feb 2017 February 10 2017

As you may already know, Mad Oils has changed the way we offer fragrance oil sales and availability.  We now offer 25 lb. drums of fragrance all year round, but we are offering 4 ounce and 16 ounce sizes of these fragrances during MOFO Events.

Our first event is coming quickly!

FEBRUARY 15, 16 & 17:

Our MOFO Event will begin by 9 am  Eastern Time (we are located in Florida, USA) on Wednesday, Feb.15th.

The fragrance oils will be open for purchase in the 4 oz and 16 oz sizes.  Do not panic!  You can order as many or as few fragrances as your heart desires in those sizes.  They will not run out!

Please make sure you have added all fragrances you want before finalizing your order. This Event will generate a large volume of orders, and for this reason, we will not be able to refund any shipping of multiple orders.  If you forget to add a fragrance to your order, and need to make an additional order, shipping charges will not be refunded. We can not combine order requests or shipping refund requests. We are still offering free shipping on orders over $99.

At 9 pm, on Feb.17th, the fragrance offerings in those sizes will be removed. We will then calculate orders and obtain the fragrances from our manufacturers on Monday February 20th. Once the fragrances arrive from our manufacturers in-house, we will bottle and ship the fragrances you purchased in a timely fashion.  This will take anywhere from 10-15 business days from the time we calculate the orders on the 20th until the time that we ship them to you.  Please also consider shipping times to your location.  If you are on the west coast of the U.S., it may take 5-7 business days after we ship your order to arrive to you if we ship via FedEx Ground or Home Delivery.

Because of this atypical turnaround, we highly suggest you do not order any other items, such as micas, additives, containers, etc. in the same order, unless you are willing to wait for these items until your fragrances are shipped.  We will not be shipping any items in an order that contains fragrances before the fragrances are ready to ship to you.  To avoid waiting on micas or other items you need, please place a separate order.

We will be conducting business as usual, so in the event you want to order additional items, stock up on colors or glitter spray pumps, or anything else we carry, please place a separate order and those will be shipped as soon as they are processed.  Our normal turnaround time is between 1-3 business days, but may be delayed depending on the volume of orders we have at the time.

We have set this MOFO Event up to be convenient for you to obtain smaller sizes of our fragrances a few times a year and we intend to process and ship your orders with speed and grace.  We understand the turnaround schedule isn't ideal, but this is how we have set it up for the time being.  We hope it works for you and that future MOFO Events can assist you in succeeding to plan ahead and make sound business decisions.

Thank you for your patience as we all experience the MOFO Event for the first time. Happy scenting!

Letter from Jo January 06 2017

Thank you for all your comments and concerns regarding our decision to modify our FO availability. We hear you.

I owned a small soap business for many years.  It was an art that I learned and loved with all my heart.  Yes, it was a financial struggle for most of those years, but I persevered. I DO know what it’s like to be a small time soap maker.  I get the struggles, the blood sweat and tears intimately.

Therefore, when Mad Oils began, we geared our products exclusively to the small businesses and hobbyists… always considering “user friendly” and ease of use for every product we offered.  That’s why we only offer jars and not bags.  Yes, bags are cheap and it is always the popular choice because of economics. But, we know that is sucks to get mica out of a bag.  Messy, wasteful, frustrating.

However, as with many small businesses we have to make hard choices to ensure we keep the doors open. One of those choices was to reduce our labor costs as it relates to fulfilling small FO orders on a daily basis.

Knowing the 25 drums are hard to purchase for the smaller businesses, we took this to heart and decided that creating the MOFO Frenzy would give smaller businesses a chance to maintain their lines unscathed.  Based on your comments we now understand that offering 16 oz was perhaps not enough.

We have decided that 4 oz sizes should be included.  We sadly cannot offer this year round anymore, but hope that the 4 oz and 16 oz offerings 3 times a year will give you what you need during those times.

The schedule for MOFO Frenzy events this year will look like this (we’ve added one sooner to accommodate your needs):

February 15, 16, and 17 will be days you can purchase 4 oz and 16 oz of the FOs we carry now, as many as you want. Once the 3 days are up, we will calculate orders and purchase the FOs from the manufacturer.  Once in-house, they will be bottled and shipped to you.

Then on April 1, 2 and 3 we will do another MOFO Frenzy and then another one on September 8th, 9th and 10th.

We understand that this news is difficult for some of you. But we hope you, as business owners, understand we have to do this. Please support us in this decision.  It was not an easy one, but we could not be more excited about the future and the path that we are on.

Karyn and I have come a long way with you. Both being single parents with children with special needs, we do our best to stay positive, be the best that we can be and persevere. We aren’t going anywhere. We dedicate this company to you and all the makers out there.

Arrowroot: The Forgotten Rhizome July 14 2015

What is it?

  • Arrowroot powder is the highly nutritious starch derived from the root/rhizome of several tropical plants – depending on location sourced.
  • It is a white, silky powder.
  • It is a cosmetic thickening agent.
  • American Indians used arrowroot powder mixed with water to make a paste that was then applied to wounds caused by poisonous arrows.  Hence the name:  arrowroot
  • It has moisture absorbing and softening properties.
  • Often used in papermaking as a fine white additive.
  • Also used in  Interested in photography, check out the read on paper making.

Uses on the epidermis?

  • Add to lotions as a thickening agent.  Arrowroot not only thickens lotions, but adds a softening element to the skin because it helps active ingredients penetrate the upper levels of the skin.
  • Use in place of baby powder (talc is a synthetic ingredient and, as of late, has been in the news with mentions of being a carcinogenic).
  • Great in cosmetic powder formulations (it’s silky, white and easy to incorporate into colors).
  • Great for acne prone skin!  Because arrowroot absorbs oils (moisture in general), it works as an ingredient in face powder.  It will absorb oil, penetrate the skin and heal blemishes, all at the same time!  Not just good for oily skin.  It’s beneficial for all skin types.
  • DIY deodorant!  Mix with coconut oil and a little baking soda (and light fragrance if desired).  It assists in eliminating toxins, absorbs moisture and ultimately reduces odor!
  • Use as a dusting powder, bronzer, eye shadow....etc
  • Dry Shampoo:  Massage a small amount of arrowroot powder into your scalp and brush!  It will absorb oils in the hair and on the scalp.
  • Face Mask:  A little lemon juice, a little arrowroot powder and a little plain yogurt.  Voila!  A face MASK!
  • Sugar scrubs, bath teas, bath bombs, etc.
  • Sunburn treatment.

What ingredients are in YOUR red mica? July 06 2015

We wrote an article today about a certain ingredient that might be in the mica you may have purchased from other mica suppliers.  Many red, pink, purple and brown mica contain carmine, which is a red pigment that originates from crushed female insects, specifically Dactylopius coccus.

Mad Oils wants to make sure that when you choose Mad Oils for any product we carry, you know exactly what you’re getting.  Mad Oils only carries 100% vegan products. Even fragrance oils contain animal content! (what?!?!)  We have been using suppliers that understand the importance of our choice and  have certified the products they make for or sell to us is 100% vegan.

Please go read the whole blog post on carmine and cosmetics.

Happy Birthday to Us! May 22 2015

It's hard to believe it's only been one year since we held our breath, pushed the button and went live with Mad Oils.  So much has happened since then. We had to move into a space three times the size of where we started. We added two more full-time employees as well as some part-timers. It seems crazy how fast we've grown and continue to grow.

As with any new business, we've made some mistakes and we've done some things right. But most of all, we've learned a lot... about business, about ourselves and about each other.  It seems we've grown right along with Mad Oils. We've been fortunate to have had more ups than downs, but we take none of it for granted. We are grateful for this ride and for each other.  Syd says you have to laugh every day and we take that sentiment to heart.  Around here, a sense of humor is our best friend. And, just to err on the side of safety, we laugh a lot!

So, happy birthday to us!  And, as we blow out the candles on our first year, we wish for many more crazy fun years to come.  We promise that we will continue to be the best in the business at customer service.  We will continue to bring you our high standards and quality products.  We will continue to put you first, since we know that without YOU there is no US!  Thanks for a great first year!

National Dance Like a Chicken Day Video May 14 2015

You might enjoy watching us dressed up in our gear with buckets on our heads dancing the "Chicken"!  So true.

And we have a promotion going on giving away free "eggs" for every order that comes in along with a 10% off coupon code that is only valid until midnight.  Code: chickendanceday

It was 85°F when we went outside in our lab onesies, hair nets, masks and buckets on our heads.  We had a lot of fun.  Thank you Tawanna, for being a sport and joining us even though "the 'Chicken Dance' isn't in the job description".  And thanks, Todd, for filming this work of art with music in your pocket and giggles in the background.

Go see us being ridiculous just for you.

New Flat Rate Shipping Choice May 01 2015

We offered extremely low priced shipping for close to a year. The shipping tiers were $3, $5, $8 and free shipping at $75. We ate 90% of the shipping costs, overall in the 11 months we've been in business. We couldn't continue offering the same quality goods for the same prices unless we charged more for shipping (closer to actual shipping) or raised our product prices.

We spent a long time discussing how to fix the shipping conundrum.

#1:  We could have offered free shipping and raised our prices significantly. But, as many of you know, free shipping IS NOT really free. It is always worked into the price of the goods being sold. Free shipping is appealing to the consumer (I fall into the trap as a consumer even though I know the the truth!) and yet, comparing prices is always on the consumer's mind. We want to be competitive in price as our competitors.

The other choice for shipping was:

#2:  We could create a flat rate shipping across the board whether you spent $5 or $100, but that would scare off the buyer who only wants to try a few samples.

On a separate note:  Because many of our customers who buy low or medium flashpoint oils do not read the shipping restrictions which state that those oils MUST ship via UPS by law, but often do not choose UPS, having the $9.95 choice enabled us to not get completely killed on shipping... UPS packages start at $9+ and go up from there; A 3 lb package, which is one of the the most common, to California costs $16+!

So, we had to make a choice. We are not out to get anyone, nor are we wanting to squeeze people for their money. We just want to provide excellent goods to remarkable people. The shipping costs have become so extreme, it's almost higher than the costs of goods sold half the time! CRAZY, I tell you!

It is important that we get feedback from people. We DID get some feedback from someone who wanted a few mica samples but didn't want to pay a high price for shipping to get them. As of tonight, I added a flat rate for our customers in the Continental United States purchasing ONLY mica samples and 1 oz jars of micas for only $6.10.  We will use Flat Rate Padded Envelopes to send them to you.  Let's see how this works out for you.

As I have always mentioned to you, we are here for you and we want your experience here to be wonderful.  If you are having problems with anything or you want to talk to us about something, speak up.  We want to hear from you.  Thank you Miss Jessica.  Because of you, we now have a small mica flat rate shipping choice!!

Thanks, all for your patience as we weather through our shipping issues.

Karyn Gets More At The Conference April 27 2015

Last week was the Handcrafted Soap & Cosmetic Guild's (HSCG) Annual Conference. Joanna and I went with the intention of meeting some of our customers, perhaps making some new ones and generally promoting our company, Mad Oils. We talked with people, made connections, mission accomplished. Right? Well, half right.

For me the conference went a little deeper. Soap makers are a unique group. We talked with everyone from suppliers to competitors to customers and I noticed one common theme. Community. And while Joanna may be well known in this community, I am not. In fact, I’ve never even made a bar of soap. You see, Mad Oils is my chapter 2. So I came into this close knit community expecting to feel like an outsider looking in and, instead, I felt welcomed with warmth. I can tell you as a psychotherapist (my chapter 1) that’s pretty rare. I saw beginners and seasoned soap makers alike working/learning together in an environment of inclusion. Now that’s pretty cool. The level of camaraderie was remarkable. I felt a connection to these friendly, creative, artistic and talented people immediately. Many of these people have known each other primarily on the internet for years. In fact, I’d be remiss not to mention the fascinating role of social media within this community. There are groups and forums, blogs and websites, all aimed at building this cohesive community. But, here, they could meet face to face and connect in real time. They were open and engaging and eager to talk about their craft. They shared recipes and suppliers, what they liked what they didn’t about each. They were helpful, to each other and to me. And I learned so much more than I had bargained for, not just about soaping, but about people. About community.

One of my favorite parts of the Conference, was that this sense of community extended to the speakers, as well. The speakers, all experts in their fields with reputations that preceded them, were never too hurried to answer questions, never too rushed to stay after and explain something in more depth or sign a book they had written. I was even lucky enough to talk with a few over cocktails at that evening’s soiree. It made me feel like no matter what level I was on, I was important and I was going to get what I needed. That’s pretty incredible in a group of 450 people. There was also a plethora of resources for sale, both at the vendor booths and from the HSCG itself. They really were able to cater to soap makers at every level, which I found impressive.

So while I went there with the intention of networking for my company, I left there feeling part of a new community of not just potential customers, but friends.

We are proud to announce that we are moving into our new home in a couple of weeks and we are super excited about it we can't keep it under wraps anymore!  Thanks to all of you, we have grown clear out of our small office/work space and we are climbing over eachother.  We are thrilled that our customers have pushed us to offer more, to bring it on, and to have no fear.  You all are our strength.  Thank YOU.

We have some people working on the place now, fixing it up and getting it ready for us, so we aren't there yet, but early December our new adress will be:

The Dude's Story Needs To Be Told September 11 2014

The story behind our logo: Our Mad Oils logo is based on a Sugar Skull that we showed to our graphic designer, but we wanted more.  Something more organic, something that would tell our story and who we are. He listened to us and took our business name, thoughts and design ideas and created two large trees being joined together by a walking bridge, while maintaining the image of a sugar skull.

What we love about this, is that it shows how complex this imagery really is. Everyone sees something different.

Karyn sees her movement from one career to another, where she can stand out on the bridge and look out at her future.

Joanna sees two things: she sees "the Dude", which is what we call him here at the workshop, because he looks like a short-legged crazy grunting funny man that runs around, curling his arms down and grunting. (she knows: weird imagery...) The other thing she sees: The untamed, unharnessed beauty of nature with our small bridge that we built so that we could bring a little bit of that magical nature to you without disturbing the beauty of it.

When Syd looks at our "Dude", she is reminded that you can always see the fun and whimsical side of life, her motto has always been that you should laugh every day of your life, and she sees it as representation that you can do anything, BE anything at whatever age you are. She sees rejuvenation in our Dude, as she begins the 3rd career of her life.

So, the Dude has history... and now you know.  So what do you see?  The great thing is that it is interpretive!  It can have whatever meaning for you, so make it your own.

Thank you, Adrian Clark, of Mad Fox! (now back in Australia).  Your talent got the job, your business name sealed the deal for the rest of the work!  You rock and we love you!

Facebook Challenge Winners! September 05 2014

Every month, we choose a photo of a finished product that one of our customers created with something from Mad Oils.  This month we also decided to have a Crazy Mica Challenge, to see what kind of madness we could stir up - - - getting the creative juices flowing, if nothing else.  In fact, we were hoping to get you all to think outside the box and really work up some magic, getting yourselves ready for a little witchy magic Halloween, perhaps?

So, for the month of August, it was hard, but we chose Kelly A.Osbourne!  This is her photo, using Mad Oils Titanium Dioxide, Orange Crush, 3 Olive Martini, Enchanted Forest, Bazooka Jo, Peacock, You're Turning Violet, Violet!

And for the Crazy Mica Challenge, it was super difficult because it was all so beautiful!!  But, we had to choose.  Kenna Cote did a very unique Rainbow Petal Soap, which we'd never seen before. and she pulled it off beautifully.

Rainbow Petal Soap with Bazooka Jo, Tangerine Dream, Bright Yellow Raincoat, The Maniacal Pea, Key West Blue & Grape Nehi, scented with Cotton Candy.

Both lovely soap makers will receive one ounce of each of these micas:

  • You're Turning Violet, Violet!
  • Lounge Lizard
  • Sister Golden Hair Surprise

Congratulations to both of you and thanks to everyone for participating.   Kelly and Kenna:  Please contact me so I know the best place to send your micas!!

Who knows?  You might win, too...You may be picked next!

Fragrance Oils Tested in Wax August 08 2014

We would like to thank Stephy Weaver for testing Mad Oils Fragrance Oils in candles.  So far, she has given us results for a few of our fragrances:  Home For The Holidays, Snow Witch, Them Apples and Wild Hyacinth.  Here are her results:

All results are based on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being highest.  I still love the idea of 1 being a “Meh-d Oil”, 5 being “Just Plain Mad”, and 10 being “It's a MAD MAD MAD MAD Oil!”

In the interest of future brevity, I'll use the following codes in every result:

  • (Scent) Votive S = (Scent) Votive, 100% soy wax, pillar blend is used in all applicable tests for both melts and votives.
  • Votives are burned for their entire 12-15 life.
  • (Scent) Votive PS = (Scent) Votive, Soy wax & votive paraffin wax blend.  The same votive wax is used in all applicable tests for both melts and votives.
  • (Scent) Votive P = (Scent) Votive, 100% paraffin votive wax.
  • (Scent) Melt S.. You get the picture. :)  Melts are melted for either 6 hours, or until scent is no longer perceptible.

Percentages used.  Votives are at 6% and melts are at 9%.  More is not recommended, especially in burning candles.  Too much FO can inhibit burn and actually negatively affect throw.  Some waxes for melts can hold 10%, but it's usually a waste.

A New Addition Coming July 16 2014

We will be introducing some new items and something new next week.  Keep your hat on.

We have so many things to share with you.

So sorry that we have run out of a few of our micas.  We have a shipment of micas arriving at some point next week, probably on Friday.  We got slammed by orders over the weekend.  I think a makeup blog may have heard about us, which is fantastic news, but it slowed our very fast turnaround time.  Our apologies.  We are experiencing some growing pains as we have gone from zero to 60 in no time flat.

Thank you all for your encouraging words and support.  It is going to continue being a fantastic year and we will continue to bring high quality products!

Stay tuned for next week's goodies.  We've got some great news a'coming your way....

Today We Experimented With Our Eye Shadow Base July 03 2014

We are formulating our eye shadow base so that our customers can use our micas and mix it with our eye shadow base and sell them instantly as eye shadows.  We are very excited about this!

We tested some of ours today on one of our employees, who also happens to be my 17 year old daughter, Nina, and we think it came out great!  Nina chose Magic Beans and Hot Man On A Tin Roof.  Those two micas are some of our personal favorites for eye shadows, too.  She has good taste like her mama.  ;)

Magic Beans really IS magical.  It changes color drastically depending on what angle you look at it and how the light reflects it.  It's brilliant as an eye shadow or in a body shimmer.

Our eye shadow base will be arriving by mid-July.  It will be called High-Functioning Eye Shadow Base.  Like us.  We're high functioning.
